Technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have paved the way for other ways of relating, doing business and coexisting in physical and virtual spaces, which benefits different industries and supports businesses that already make the benefits of the technological revolution their own.

Under this scenario, applications based on 5G have skyrocketed, in the interconnection of devices through the network (LoT) or in virtual universes that give rise to the metaverse, which is already here and could become part of our daily lives.

For example, the online gaming industry is already developing in the metaverse and generated transactions of more than 180,000 million dollars in 2021Considering that the metaverse is here to stay, we must also consider that it will require an infrastructure that provides the storage and processing of data exponentially.

The metaverse is tomorrow's technology that cannot be based on the infrastructure of yesterday. A trend has already been created and now it is up to us to move forward, be disruptive and create the necessary platforms so that this virtual universe has the omnipresence and latency necessary to make a functional economy.

While it is true, the metaverse may be the next great platform after mobile devices, it is necessary to adapt the current computing and data storage infrastructure. Otherwise, the user experience when transacting, sharing knowledge and interacting with other people in the digital environment would be unstable and unreliable.

The sophisticated mechanisms of virtual experiences require the processing of the large volume of data; therefore, we will require Edge infrastructures that respond to the demand required for the metaverse to work properly. It is estimated that we will require 1000 times the current computing power to meet the metaverse needs.

Requirements for the metaverse data center:

  • Proximity: The more information you process, the more Edge will be needed. Therefore, in a Super Bowl, micro-Edge data centers are built near the stadium to provide the required capacity to the attendees.
  • Power: ensuring the energy necessary for the Data Center to function is a complex task in Latin America given the lack of available power. In addition, consideration should be given to expanding that capacity.
  • Connectivity: interconnection, network availability and low latency. Infrastructures connected and appropriate to 5G will be necessary. According ABI Research 5G will bring at least a 10-fold improvement in performance and a 10-fold reduction in latency compared to 4G.
  • Sustainability: at present it is possible to make use of state-of-the-art cooling systems equipped to use energy efficiently. The use of renewable energy to operate a data center must be prioritized.

Conclusion

The metaverse will be applied in medical practices, education, business, industrial applications, travel, among others, that will represent infrastructure grow challenges in both storage and processing. While it is true, it is not currently what Mark Zuckerberg has promised, appropriating of the word metaverse, it goes beyond Facebook and it will be the future, and for this, we must prepare the infrastructures that make it possible.

This scenario is seen as a new form of socialization and development of activities with the opportunity to create and optimize data centers that respond to the required demand.
